Village Wall

A wall around the part of the village you want to keep.

The Village Wall encloses as much of the village as you draw around, with a gate. Press at one corner, drag to the opposite one and release: anything from fourteen to sixty-four metres a side. The cost and the builder's time follow the length of the wall, so a sixteen-metre square is still 120 timber and 40 stone. What it takes to get through does not: a wall is a run of pieces, and breaking one is the same work whatever the ring's size, so length buys shelter and rebuilding buys strength. Villagers open the gate themselves, and it stays shut while raiders are on the field: a party comes to it when it is anywhere near and breaks a length of wall only when it is not, and a bar over the lintel shows what the wall has left while it works. Rebuilt in limestone and then in cast concrete, the same wall shelters what is inside a little better and stands a good deal longer.

Rendered in the game: the same wall on the same field, with only what it is built of changed.

01 / Find its place

Make room for it.

Draw it around the buildings you already have: press at one corner and drag to the opposite one. The line needs clear ground the whole way round; the builder turns the four corners with a corner piece and puts the gate where a path already crosses the line, so an existing road keeps its way through.

02 / Help it grow

Improvements & appearance.

Improve rebuilds the whole line. The timber palisade becomes limestone, and limestone becomes cast concrete. Each rebuild shelters what is inside a little better and stands a good deal longer while raiders work at it, and the line and the gate stay where you drew them. A longer line costs more to rebuild, in the same proportion it cost to build.

03 / A little help

If something seems stuck.

Shelter follows the line, so a home just outside the wall is not sheltered. If placement fails, move the rectangle or change its size until the ground under the whole line is clear and every entrance inside still reaches the gate. A side shorter than fourteen metres has no room for two corners with a gate between them.
